A non-pharmacological approach to improve sleep quality in older adults

This study found that a community programme combining Tai Chi, art, mindfulness, and music helped older Singaporean adults sleep better, offering a drug-free way to manage sleep problems in later life.

Dataset on gene expression in the elderly after Mindfulness Awareness Practice or Health Education Program

This paper reports on gene activity changes in elderly participants with mild memory problems after nine months of either mindfulness training or a general health education programme, using blood tests to explore what may be happening at a cellular level.

Neuropsychiatric and Cognitive Subtypes among Community-Dwelling Older Persons and the Association with DSM-5 Mild Neurocognitive Disorder: Latent Class Analysis

By grouping older Singaporeans based on their symptoms, this study identified different combinations of mood, behaviour, and memory problems that relate differently to a formal diagnosis of mild cognitive decline. This could help doctors better tailor care to each pattern.

Directional associations between memory impairment and depressive symptoms: Data from a longitudinal sample and meta-analysis

Combining Singapore data with results from other studies worldwide, this research found that memory problems tend to lead to depression in older adults, rather than depression causing memory problems. This helps clarify which problem tends to come first.

Effects of horticultural therapy on elderly’ health: protocol of a randomized controlled trial

This study protocol describes a trial testing whether gardening activities can improve the mental health, thinking skills, and physical health of older adults in Singapore.

Targeted metabolomics reveals altered oxylipin profiles in plasma of mild cognitive impairment patients

By testing blood samples from 60 people with mild memory problems and 56 without, this study found differences in certain fat-related molecules in the blood. This points to changes in how the body processes fats as a possible early sign of cognitive decline.

Poor sleep quality is observed in Mild Cognitive Impairment and is largely unrelated to depression and anxiety

This study found that older adults with mild memory problems slept worse than those without, but this poor sleep was not mainly caused by depression or anxiety. This suggests sleep problems may be an early, independent sign of cognitive decline.

Art therapy and music reminiscence activity in the prevention of cognitive decline: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial

This study protocol describes a trial comparing art therapy and music-based reminiscence activities for elderly Singaporeans with early memory problems. It tracks changes in thinking, mood, and brain ageing markers over nine months.

Ageing in a Community Environment Study (ACES) Cohort

This entry describes a Singapore study group of about 900 mostly Chinese older adults, used in several other studies to test and validate mental and cognitive health questionnaires.

Epidemiology of Mental Disorders (Including Cross-Cultural Comparisons)

This book chapter reviews how common mental illnesses are among older adults around the world, comparing rates and risk factors across different cultures.
