Factors associated with informal and formal help-seeking among Asian adolescents with nonsuicidal self-injury

In a group of 121 Singaporean teenagers who self-harm without suicidal intent, this study found that those with more severe self-harm were more likely to seek help from friends or family, while having parents seen as more authoritative was linked to being less likely to seek this kind of informal help.

This study compared personality traits, parenting experiences, mental health history, and stressful life events between Asian teenagers who had attempted suicide and those who hadn’t, finding attempters were more likely to have other mental health conditions, recent stressful events, and to feel rejected by their parents.
